Good gear doesn't have to be complicated. With a bit of research and the right resources, you can put together a solid kit without spending a fortune.
Local shops worth visiting
For hands-on advice and the chance to try before you buy, these shops know their stuff:
- Wild Earth (Burleigh Heads)
- Bunyips (Lismore and Byron Bay)
- Byron Bay Camping & Disposals (Byron Bay)
Day hiking
Day hiking gear is straightforward. Your success on the trail mostly comes down to footwear and a good pack.
For shoes, always try them on in-store and walk downhill if you can. Many hiking stores will have an area just for this! Your toes should have room to move without pressing against the front of the shoe. Good grip matters in any conditions.
For packs, always try them on while loaded with weight. A pack that "fits" empty can sit completely differently on your back once it's full — which is exactly how you'll be hiking with it!
Multi-day hiking
Multi-day kit takes more thought, but it's manageable if you focus on the five items that matter most:
- Backpack
- Shelter
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping mat
- Rainwear
Get this gear right and you'll have a good experience regardless of what else is in your pack.
Try before you buy — Byron Hiking Club members have access to the club's tents, sleeping bags, packs, and mats for a minimal fee.
